Hunger Threshold in Turkey Surpasses 21,000 TL
TÜRK-İŞ has announced that the monthly food expenditure required for a family of four living in Ankara to maintain a healthy, balanced, and sufficient diet has risen to 21,083.28 TL. This amount was set at 20,561.65 TL the previous month. The increase in the hunger threshold indicates that economic conditions are becoming increasingly difficult.
The food expenditure for a family of four has increased by 2.54% compared to the previous month. This statement from TÜRK-İŞ provides important data on how inflation rates in the country are affecting daily life. The twelve-month change in the hunger threshold is 46.09%, while the annual average increase stands at 62.35%. These figures highlight the significant rise in daily living costs for families.
The poverty line is also on the rise. TÜRK-İŞ reported that the total expenditure required for food and other essential needs such as clothing, housing, transportation, education, and healthcare, known as the poverty line, has also increased. The poverty line has risen from 66,976 TL to 68,675 TL.
This increase further intensifies the financial pressure facing families. Rising costs for basic needs such as rent, electricity, and water are straining family budgets, making it difficult to allocate sufficient resources for non-food expenditures. This situation seriously affects workers trying to live on minimum wage.
Questions regarding minimum wage are currently on the agenda. The minimum wage for 2025 was set at 22,104 TL. However, data from TÜRK-İŞ indicates that the minimum wage is insufficient to cover living costs. The cost of living for a single worker has also been reported to be 27,364 TL.
