Danish Prime Minister Declares 'Greenland Belongs to Greenlanders'

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen stated that Greenland is not for sale in response to U.S. President-elect Donald Trump's obsession with purchasing the vast Arctic island. Frederiksen emphasized that Greenland's Prime Minister Múte Egede is "very, very clear" that there is strong support among the Greenlandic people for the notion that Greenland is not for sale and will not be in the future.

However, in an effort to ease potential tensions with Trump, Frederiksen highlighted her willingness to cooperate with Washington in the Arctic, even during the visit of the elected president's son: "We need very, very close cooperation with the U.S. On the other hand, I want everyone to respect that the Greenlandic people are a nation. What is at stake here is their country," she stated, adding that Greenland should be able to determine its own fate.

Frederiksen acknowledged that the world’s largest island, which is an autonomous part of the Kingdom of Denmark, might pursue independence in the coming years.
